How Big is 1,000 Square Feet?

Harmonic is a partner of Dwellsy.

When searching for a new rental property, one of the main aspects of the search is the amount of living space the floor plan offers. Knowing what square footage you’re looking for is important before diving into the search. Obviously, you know that 500 square feet is less than 1,000 square feet, but how big is 1,000 square feet, really?

How do you calculate square footage?

In most rental listings, the landlord, property manager, or real estate agent has already provided the square footage. However, if you need to calculate the square footage yourself, you can measure the length and width of a room and multiply the two numbers by each other. This number will be the square footage of any given room.

What can I fit into 1,000 square feet?

The floor plan of a 1,000-square-foot apartment can look very different depending on the layout and where it is located. For example, if it’s located in New York, it may be more of an open concept, with the living room and dining room in one large area. But if it’s located in a smaller town or city, it may have a different house plan.

Depending on how much furniture you have and how many bedrooms you need, you could live very comfortably in a 1,000-square-foot home. Additionally, this size of home can usually house a family of four, two roommates, or a couple.

What do 1,000 square feet look like?

To give you an idea of what a 1,000-square-foot home looks like, consider the average size two-car garage which is usually 400 square feet. So an average home that is 1,000 square feet would be two and a half times the size of a two-car garage.

Another example that may be helpful would be to think about the average singles tennis court, which is about 2,106 square feet. Therefore, a 1,000-square-foot rental is about one-half of a regulation single tennis court.

How many bedrooms are there in a 1,000-square-foot apartment?

While each 1000 sq. ft. home is different and unique, generally, there are two bedrooms in a home of this size. Normally, a 1,000-square-foot apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a dining room.

According to a study done in 2018, the average two-bedroom home in the United States is 34% larger than a one-bedroom apartment. Some may even have two floors, with the dining area and living room on the main floor, with the master bedroom and another bedroom on the second floor. This creates built-in separate spaces for you and whoever you choose to live with to have your own space in the home.

What’s the average cost of an apartment per square foot?

The cost of an apartment per square foot varies wildly depending on the city or town you are searching for a rental property. The most recent study conducted in 2018 says that the average cost per square foot of a two-bedroom unit in the United States is $1.73. This study also found that two-bedroom apartments make up 81% of the entire rental market.

Of course, the per-square-foot cost of an apartment doesn’t take into account the furnishing you may have to do to make it a home. When moving into a 1,000 sq ft house, you may be moving from a small house and may need to furnish a much larger home. When thinking about searching for a larger home, consider the furnishing costs as well as the per-square-foot price.
