For this episode of Rent Matters, Jonas Bordo spoke to Emily about her current search for a new rental. As some of our previous episodes have discussed, it is not always easy looking for a rental during COVID. Emily was kind enough to share the tips she’s gathered from her experiences rent hunting on episode nine of Rent Matters.

Don’t Waste Your Time

If you have gone online to look for a rental home, chances are you’ve utilized Google search. During these technologically driven times, Google is practically everyone’s go-to for everything. Unfortunately, it is not the most reliable platform for apartment hunting.

Emily experienced this challenge first-hand, when she initially began her rental search. Using websites like Google and Craigslist, Emily was frequently presented with listings that were not in-line with her specific needs. Most of the results either did not have a garage or weren’t cat-friendly, two deal-breakers for Emily and her partner. To make matters worse, she also narrowly avoided a rental scam. For a more elaborate account of Emily’s close-call, give this Rent Matters episode a listen.

Rental listing sites like Dwellsy, enable you to narrow your search down to verified rental homes so that you do not have to worry about getting roped into a scam. This is most important because you may be asked to share personal financial information when looking for a rental home, information that can be catastrophic in hands of the wrong individuals. Remember to be conscientious about who you share your financial information with and, when in doubt, know that verified listings are the way to go.

Emily’s Advice: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for What You Want

There are times to be flexible and times to be stern. When you’re looking for a rental home, it is important to assess what details and amenities are must-haves. Once you have compiled that list, stick to it. You know better than anyone else what your needs are, so trust yourself. If you don’t speak up, you are much more likely to be let down. Take Emily’s advice. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.
